Banned Books Week 2017

The last week of September is Banned Books Week. This has been an effort started and promoted by the American Library Association since 1982 to bring awareness to books that have, throughout the course of history, been banned, censored, challenged, or expurgated by local, state and national governments here at home as well as abroad.

Every Fall since 2016 the Fullerton College Library sponsors an essay writing contest in conjunction with Banned Books Week. Please see the flyer below for more information about the contest.

Fullerton College 2017 Banned Books Contest Rules:

Eligibility: All currently enrolled Fullerton College students are eligible to participate.

Steps:

  1. Select and read a banned book: A banned book can be defined as, “any book that has been banned, censored, challenged or restricted.” The selected book can be any verifiably banned or challenged book, but all students are encouraged to select a suitable college-reading-level book. Ask any FC librarian with assistance in selecting or researching a banned book. The book does not have to be from FC Library.
  2. Write a 750-1000 word essay answering any one of the three essay questions on the reverse of this flyer using supporting ideas from the banned book of your choosing.
  3. Submit your essay (.docx or .doc format only) to the Student Programming Librarian Val Macias, at vmacias@fullcoll.edu with the subject line “2017 Essay Contest Submission” due OCTOBER 13, 2017 11:00 P.M. Include your first name, last name and Banner ID number on the essay. Use of the MLA format is encouraged. No hand-delivered paper submissions please. Submissions sent after the posted date will not be considered.

Judging Criteria:

FC judging faculty will look for the following criteria in the essays:

  • Organization
  • Strength of argument
  • Adherence to the prompt
  • Supporting details
  • Format
  • Language mechanics (i.e., grammar, spelling, and punctuation)

Three winners (first, second and third place) will be announced on November 3, 2017. The prizes are as follows:

  • $200 for first place
  • $100 for second place
  • $50 for third place

Certificates of achievement will be issued to the winners and certificates of participation will be awarded to all participants upon request. An essay reading event is planned for all participants.

Questions? Come talk to any librarian at the reference desk for more details. You can also e-mail Val Macias at vmacias@fullcoll.edu or at (714) 992-7381 or contest co-coordinator Stephanie Burnham at sburnham@fullcoll.edu.

Academic Honesty:

Fullerton College’s policy on plagiarism fully applies. Participating students who submit essays are responsible for submitting academically honest work. Students are expected to submit original written work, with credit given to any sources where required, which includes the full, proper and complete use of citations and works cited pages in their work. Essays with suspected plagiarism will be disqualified.
