Library Instruction
The purpose of library
instruction is to teach students to do library research efficiently
and effectively. Librarians knowledgeable in the use of various
research tools provide a friendly introduction to the research
process. Information about classroom equipment or tours for disabled
students is available at Adaptive Equipment
and Services. By way of
an instruction session, tour, or Research class, students can
acquaint themselves not only with the physical layout but also
with the varied resources. This is an important first step in
overcoming any anxiety which may be associated with library research.
There are three options:
1. BASIC LIBRARY INSTRUCTION SESSIONS: (50 minutes
each)
Four basic library instruction sessions are offered throughout
the semester: These session are:
I. Basic Research Survival Skills
II.Evaluating Web Sites
III.Preventing Plagiarism: Using Turnitin.com and NoodleBib
IV.Works Cited Made Easy with MLA
Students may come at
any scheduled time. Sign up is not required. Each instruction
session is structured around an optional written exercise designed
to give hands-on practice and to be used for verification of attendance.
All Basic Instruction Sessions are held in the Library's electronic
classroom Room 827.
2. SUBJECT INSTRUCTION SESSIONS:
Instructors are encouraged to request an instruction session
for specific classes. A librarian will tailor the session to
the needs of these students. The instruction session on "How
to Prepare a Works Cited Using MLA," as noted above, can
also be scheduled for a specific class. All instruction sessions
must be scheduled one week in advance. Instructors should call
the Library Administrative Assistant at 992-7061 to arrange
a session, or stop by the Library to fill out the Instruction
Session Request form (Online version requires Adobe
AcrobatReader.)
