  • Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Alternate Fuels Data Center - From the United States Department of Energy, this website contains 3,000 online documents pertaining to the issue of alternative energy
  • Energy Information Administration - The official site of the EIA, a statistical agency for the Department of Energy, which provides users with all types of energy statistics. Access energy information by geography, fuel type and price.
  • Fuel Cells: Green Power - A .PDF report on alternative fuel cells and their applications, written by two scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • Harvesting Clean Energy - The official website for the non-profit organization that builds awareness in using alternative and renewable energy sources for rural landowners and communities. Provides resources of four different types of renewable energy
  • Renewable Resource Data Center - Managed by the Department of Energy, the RReDC provides materials on different types of alternative energy (such as wind, solar, biomass and geothermal)
  • Renewable Energy Policy Project - The goal of the website is "to accelerate the use of renewable energy by providing credible information, insightful policy analysis, and innovative strategies amid changing energy markets and mounting environmental needs by researching, publishing, and disseminating information, creating policy tools, and hosting highly active, on-line, renewable energy discussion groups"

  • Center on Reinventing Public Education - This websites takes an in-depth look and significant issues in education in order to improve school policies and provides readers with links reports and bibliography of CRPE publications that may be purchased
  • Education Resources Information Center - The ERIC database contains a collection of 107,000 full-text non-journal articles (from 1993 to 2004) as well as 1.1 million citations that go as far back as 1966, and is completely free to search
  • The Educator's Reference Desk - A directory that contains links to Internet sites pertaining to different aspects of education
  • FairTest: The National Center for Fair & Open Testing - Provides materials on the issue of testing in all levels of education. Highlights the problems with testing and poses solutions, as well as provide web links to relevant sources.
  • The Inevitable Corruption of Indicators and Educators Through High-Stakes Testing - A .PDF study from Arizona State University that found "that the over-reliance on high-stakes testing has serious negative repercussions that are present at every level of the public school system"
  • The Nation's Report Card - The National Center for Education Statistics offers this website documenting statistical information regarding test results in the United States
  • National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing - From the website: "For 20 years the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) has conducted research and development that improves assessment and accountability systems."
  • No Child Left Behind - The U.S. Department of Education's portal for the No Child Left Behind policy. Includes resources for teachers and students
  • Standards and Testing - This collection of essays on the topic of testing comes from the personal website for Alfie Kohn, who has written on such topics as education, human behavior and parenting.

  • FAS Project on Government Secrecy - Internet site for the Federation of American Scientists who provides news, documents and resources on instances of government secrecy
  • Freedom of Information Act (U.S. Department of Justice) - A description of the process for submitting a FOIA request offered by the U.S. Department of Justice
  • OpentheGovernment.org - A pro-open government organization, Open The Government provides users with updates on government secrecy policies as well as relevant news stories and resources
  • Report of the Commission on Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy - An extensive online report (with chapters provided in .PDF format) written in 1997, it provides an in-depth look at the effects of the use (and misuse) of government secrecy
  • Secrecy Report Card 2005 - A detailed .PDF report by OpentheGovernment.org that covers the current state of secrecy, definitions of secrecy labels and the expense of classification
  • Sunshine Week - Established in 2005, Sunshine Week is an organization that motivates "newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, Web sites and others [to] continue a dialogue about the importance of open government to the public."

Media Violence

  • Children, Violence and the Media - An online report by the Senate Judiciary Committee published in 1999 that looks to define the problem of youth violence as caused by the media. Support of their argument is done through statistics and suggests methods in which parents can lessen the exposure of violent media to children.
  • Congressional Testimony on Media Violence - A lengthy testimony by Henry Jenkins who outlines his response to the issue of "moral panic" over media violence
  • "Does TV Kill?" - An online transcript from the television program, Frontline (provided by the University of Oregon's Media Literacy Online Project)
  • Henry Jenkins - Website for MIT professor Henry Jenkins who studies the media's impact on society. Features links to online articles and essays
  • Marketing Violent Entertainment to Children - A .PDF version of the 2000 report by the Federal Trade Commission that discusses their finding that "Companies in Motion Picture, Music Recording and Electronic Game Industries Routinely Target Children Under 17; Retailers Make 'Little Effort' to Restrict Access to Violent Material"
  • Media Violence & Children - A research guide provided by the Pollak Library at California State University Fullerton
  • National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center - An organization that offers online resources for students, parents and professionals on the issue of preventing youth violence
  • Teen Health and the Media - Funded by the Washington State Department of Health, this website offers news, projects, resources and a "Fast Facts" page that deal with the issue of the influence of media violence on children and adolescents
  • Video Game Violence and Public Policy - An essay by Dr. David Walsh, head of the National Institute on Media and the Family, that looks to creating tighter policies on violent video games and their marketing to children. Provides studies concerning the possible impact of violent video games and counters First Amendment-related arguments
  • Violent Video Games: Myths, Facts and Unanswered Questions - Written by Craig Anderson, this essay attempts to present arguments used by video game industry advocates as myths by providing counterarguments
  • Youth Violence: A Report of the Surgeon General - An online version of the report written by Surgeon General David Satcher as a response to the school shooting incident at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Presents the issue of youth violence by writing on topics such as myths, risk factors and preventive measures against violence

  • Global Connection: The Middle East - From the website, "Global Connections is the online home to a family of sites created to help teachers, students, and the general public learn more about events around the world through readings, lesson plans, links, timelines, and maps."
  • History in the News: The Middle East - This website offers a collection of online resources that relate to some aspect of the Middle East including religion, history, culture and politics
  • Islamic and Middle Easter Music and Dance - A website that offers information on the music of the Middle East including instruments, types of dance and its role in society
  • The Israel Project - "The Israel Project (TIP) is an international non-profit organization devoted to educating the press and the public about Israel while promoting security, freedom and peace."
  • Matson Negatives - "The G. Eric and Edith Matson Negatives are a rich source of historical images of the Middle East—notably Palestine, present day Israel, and the West Bank—from 1898 to1946. The collection contains 20,000 glass and film photographic negatives, created by the American Colony Photo Department and its successor firm, the Matson Photo Service." Searching and viewing these photographs is free.
  • The Middle East Information Network - "The Middle East Information Network is an American organization based in Boston, MA. We are a small group dedicated to providing accurate and comprehensive information about the Middle East. We are non-partisan, meaning we do not take sides."
  • Palestinian-Israeli Conflict - A collection of articles that present both sides to a particular issue in the greater Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The website has it's previous editions archived and offers documents that relate specifically to the conflict.
