The Hornet Student Newspaper 1923-2006
Preservation Project

The Preservation of the Fullerton College Hornet Student Newspaper was a multi-step grant written by Fullerton College Librarians in the Spring of 2007. The proposals were funded, as announced on June 6, 2007 in the Summer President’s Weekly, through the Dynamic Funds process.

One phase of the project is the preservation on microfilm of the fragile Hornet student newspaper back issues that currently reside in bound volumes in the library’s archival collection.  The positive impact to students served and the campus overall is that the journalistic history of the campus, community, and world, seen from the perspective of Fullerton College students through history, shall be preserved in perpetuity. Microfilm preservation has a life expectancy of 500 years.

To ensure a wider audience, this project will also digitize the Hornet newspapers from microfilm so that the pages can be accessed online through the Library website. The digital collection will support the pursuit of life-long learning for on and off-campus users and provide primary source documents of the college’s history that can be integrated into course curriculum. 

This project also includes the purchase of a site license for ContentDM Digital Collection Management Software that will provide state-of-the-art 24/7 online access to the digital Hornet student newspaper.  The ContentDM software allows searching the digitized material using numerous access points including full-text, keyword and by date.

Once the newspapers are preserved and digitized, the library can offer online access to users utilizing state-of-the-art software. Students will be able to complete assignments remotely and have access to this valuable resource.
