The Fullerton
College Library Online Archives is a database with selected
photographs from the library’s historical collection and
issues from the student newspaper, The Hornet. Both collections
vividly illustrate the societal changes that have occurred since
the college’s founding in 1913.
As one of the oldest continuously-operating
community colleges in California, Fullerton College possesses
a historical collection that documents its long history. The
photographs, from the 1910s into 2009, include academic and vocational
classes as well as sporting events, campus clubs, theatrical
productions, and other extracurricular activities that reflect
college life in this Orange County city.
The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) is a federal grant
program administered in California by the State Librarian for
the development of libraries. The Fullerton College LSTA project
to digitize the historical photos was part of the California Local
History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP) supported by the U.S.
Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Hornet newspaper project included
the digitization of the student newspaper from 1923 into 2006
to provide access through the Fullerton College Library Online
Archives database. The project also resulted in the creation
of microfilm reels which have a long life expectancy to preserve
the content and to provide access to it through microfilm readers.
The Hornet digitization project was funded through college Dynamic
Funds.
All of files are stored on a campus
server and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management
tool. As funding becomes available, the digital collection in
the Fullerton College Library Online Archives will grow in the
future.
