A subject directory, or subject list, is a hierarchical
subject tree which organizes Web documents. Web sites are assigned
to a subject category such as "Entertainment," "Health," " Science," etc.
These are organized by humans. Directories find fewer and often
more relevant sites.
Google Directory - www.google.com/dirhp
"The web organized by topic into categories." This directory
includes about 1.5 million sites which are selected by thousands of volunteer
editors, not by Google staff.
INFOMINE - infomine.ucr.edu
A virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty
and students at the university level. This directory is librarian built and includes about
100,000 scholarly Internet sites.
Librarians' Index to the Internet - www.lii.org
”Web Sites You Can Trust.” This directory was developed by
librarians and contains over 20,000 sites.
Yahoo! - dir.yahoo.com
One of the first subject directories, Yahoo! consists of over 2 million submitted
web pages.
