BASIC RULES FOR FORMATTING YOUR WORKS CITED PAGE (MLA 5.4)

There are some basic rules to remember when formatting your Works Cited list:

  • Begin your Works Cited list on a separate page from the text of your research paper.
  • Title or label the cited list Works Cited (do not underline, bold or put “quotation marks” around the words Works Cited)
  • Margins at the top, bottom and sides should be one inch each
  • All entries for your Works Cited are arranged in alphabetical order unless your instructor tells you otherwise
  • Double space all entries
  • The first line of each entry is set flush left, then indent the second and all following lines of a citation 5 spaces or 1/2 inch. For example:

Gillespie, Paula, and Neal Learner. The

Allyn and Bacon Guide to Peer Tutoring.

     Boston: Allyn, 2000.

Morehead, Joe. Introduction to United

     States Government Information

     Sources. 6th ed. Englewood, NJ:

     Libraries Unlimited, 1999.
